Our Local FIRM is back

meeting

At PosWork, we believe that we have a role to play in helping community-minded small business owners to build positive relationships with others and support each other in their ventures in business and life.

That’s why we run Our Local FIRM lunches:

  • to have a bit of FUN through social engagement over a meal
  • to get INSPIRATION from others’ stories or news
  • to build positive RELATIONSHIPS and
  • to find MEANING through belonging to a positive business community

Each month, we bring people together to share their needs, stories, triumphs and challenges.

We also have a discussion on a relevant business theme and collect songs for our playlists against the 4 Our Local FIRM pillars of Fun, Inspiration, Relationships and Meaning.

Your commitment – your time, the cost of your lunch and drinks and your contribution in discussions and with your song – and remember “no selling”.

This month, the discussion question  is: “What does the federal election result mean for small business owners?”

The playlist song theme is “Fun” = songs that put a smile on your face.

We’ll collect them and add them to the Our Local FIRM playlists on YouTube music.

Is forgiveness divine?

meeting

“To err is human, to forgive divine”. That famous quotation from celebrated English poet, Alexander Pope

Did you know that having an attitude of forgiveness has many positive effects on our mental health and wellbeing?

Let’s explore those.

  1. Emotional well-being: Forgiveness frees you from the burden of negative emotions such as anger, resentment, and bitterness. By letting go of grudges, you release yourself from the emotional pain associated with holding onto past grievances. This can contribute to improved mental and emotional well-being.

  2. Reduced stress: Holding onto anger and resentment can lead to chronic stress, which negatively affects both your physical and mental health. Forgiveness helps to alleviate this stress by promoting a sense of peace and acceptance. It allows you to move forward without carrying the weight of past grievances.

  3. Improved relationships: Forgiving others can strengthen your relationships. Holding onto grudges creates a barrier between you and the person you’re holding a grudge against. By practicing forgiveness, you open the door for reconciliation and improved communication. It fosters empathy and understanding, leading to healthier and more fulfilling relationships.

  4. Personal growth: Forgiveness is a powerful tool for personal growth and development. It requires introspection and self-reflection, as it encourages you to examine your own emotions and reactions. By choosing forgiveness, you demonstrate emotional maturity and resilience, which can help you navigate future conflicts more effectively.

  5. Health benefits: Studies have shown that forgiveness has positive effects on physical health. Letting go of grudges and cultivating forgiveness has been associated with lower blood pressure, reduced risk of heart disease, improved immune system function, and decreased levels of depression and anxiety. Forgiveness contributes to overall well-being by promoting a healthier mind and body.

  6. Inner peace and happiness: Forgiveness allows you to find inner peace and happiness. By releasing negative emotions and letting go of past hurts, you create space for positive emotions such as love, compassion, and joy. It helps you to live in the present moment and focus on building a brighter future, unburdened by the weight of the past.

  7. Spiritual and moral growth: Forgiveness is often seen as a virtue in many spiritual and religious traditions. It aligns with principles such as compassion, kindness, and mercy. Cultivating forgiveness can contribute to your spiritual and moral growth by helping you develop a greater sense of empathy, understanding, and acceptance towards others.

Remember that forgiveness is a personal journey, and it doesn’t mean condoning or forgetting the actions of others. It is about freeing yourself from the negative impact of those actions and choosing to move forward with a lighter heart and a more compassionate mindset.

OUR Local FIRM is flying

meeting

Our Local FIRM is a social connection and wellbeing hub for small business owners in Melbourne’s outer-east.

The FIRM stands for Fun, Inspiration, Relationships and Meaning – all essential ingredients for a vibrant business group.

PosWork Practice Leader, Peter Maguire created the group to meet needs that local small business owners identified during the pandemic lockdowns – a need to be socially connected and a need to learn more about how to look after the wellbeing of themselves and their families and in their workplaces.

Peter gathered a team of experienced, talented and positive minded people and culture consultants and coaches in Jen Riseborough of Next Level You, Tegan Rose of Hunt and Rose and Catie Paterson of Catie Paterson HR and together they went through a Certificate in Creating Wellbeing in Small Business Workplaces courtesy of Business Victoria.

The program which was delivered by the Wellbeing Lab provided lots of research, ideas and practical tools on wellbeing using a positive psychology approach.

The Our Local FIRM facilitation team is passing on the wellbeing learnings from that program in bite sized chunks at lunches at 2 monthly intervals where people also get that social connection with each other and build positive personal and business relationships.

Each lunch features:
  • 1 VIA Character Strength that participants unpack and explore in the context of their personal experiences
  • 1 PERMAH Pillar which people discuss and learn from each other’s perspectives on challenges and successes i. that space
  • Give and Take where people have the opportunity to share news, gratitude, opportunities or needs with the group
  • A healthy lunch provided by Glen Park Community Centre
Outside the lunches, Our Local FIRM is active on social media with a members only group on Linkedin where lots of wellbeing and business resources (blogs, videos, TED talks, podcasts and more) are shared for any member to use.
There is also an active Facebook group for members to interact, learn more about each other and support each other.
