We have been through tough times in recent years and science tells us that our resilience is very much linked to our ability to maintain a positive mindset so that, as the crew at the Michelle McQuaid Group put it, we can still “live well with struggle”. One very important part of that is to be kind to ourselves and so we thought that we might share a few thoughts on the practice of self-compassion.

Self-compassion is the practice of treating yourself with kindness, understanding, and acceptance, particularly in times of difficulty, failure, or suffering.

It involves extending the same compassion and care towards oneself that you would offer to a close friend or loved one who is going through a challenging experience. Self-compassion is an important aspect of overall well-being and has several benefits for individuals. Here’s why practicing self-compassion is good for you:

  1. Emotional well-being: Self-compassion helps you develop a healthier and more positive relationship with yourself. It fosters self-acceptance and reduces self-criticism, which can lead to decreased anxiety, depression, and stress levels. By offering yourself support and understanding, you can build emotional resilience and improve your overall psychological well-being.
  2. Increased self-esteem: Self-compassion allows you to recognize and appreciate your own worth and value as a person, irrespective of external achievements or comparisons with others. It helps you develop a sense of self-worth that is not contingent on perfection or meeting unrealistic standards. As a result, your self-esteem and self-confidence can increase.
  3. Motivation and growth: Contrary to popular belief, self-compassion doesn’t promote complacency or laziness. It provides a nurturing environment for personal growth and learning. When you treat yourself with kindness, you create a safe space to acknowledge and learn from mistakes, without the fear of harsh self-judgment. This self-acceptance and encouragement can foster a growth mindset, leading to increased motivation and resilience in pursuing your goals.
  4. Improved relationships: Practicing self-compassion can positively impact your relationships with others. When you cultivate self-compassion, you become more understanding and empathetic towards yourself, which extends to how you interact with others. By embracing your own imperfections and treating yourself kindly, you’re more likely to show empathy and compassion towards others, resulting in healthier and more fulfilling relationships.
  5. Physical health benefits: Self-compassion has been associated with several physical health benefits. Studies have shown that individuals who practice self-compassion have lower levels of inflammation and healthier immune system functioning. They may also engage in healthier behaviors, such as taking care of their bodies, seeking medical help when needed, and making choices that promote overall well-being.

In summary, practicing self-compassion is good for you because it nurtures emotional well-being, boosts self-esteem, promotes motivation and growth, enhances relationships, and has potential physical health benefits. It involves treating yourself with the same kindness, understanding, and acceptance that you would extend to others, ultimately leading to a more compassionate and fulfilling life.

Building meaningfulness in your workplace

From 2018 to 2022. the Wellbeing Lab partnered with the Australian Human Resources Institute to conduct a series of national workplace wellbeing surveys. There were three key findings from the aggregated data:

  1. That there had been a significant drop in resilience among Australian workers
  2. That there had been a significant decrease in people finding meaning in work and
  3. That, if you invested in an Employee Assistance Program. it was marginally better than doing nothing.

In this blog, we want to explore the second of those and the questions of why meaning is important and how you can boost meaningfulness through the lens of character strengths.

Why is meaning important?

Meaning is the fourth pillar of Professor Martin Seligman’s PERMA model of the essential elements of wellbeing – what we all need to lead a flourishing life. It is about feeling that you have a purpose and that you are part of and contributing to something bigger than yourself. There is plenty of research that shows that having meaning in your life is good for health and happiness and resilience.

Examples of meaningfulness in practice

There are a variety of ways and settings in which we can get meaning in our lives such as:

  • Our families – the meaning of providing for them, looking after them, watching our children grow, shared interests with members of the family
  • Our work – the impact that I have in the application of our skills and strengths to make a contribution for my employer and my workmates and our customers or clients
  • Our community – whether I serve a community cause or I am a member of a sporting tribe or I have  some other group connection that gives me a sense of belonging.

Meaningfulness and character strengths

Six of the VIA Character Strengths especially align with good mindfulness practice, namely appreciation of beauty and excellence, curiosity, social intelligence, perspective, gratitude and spirituality. Below is the VIA Character Institute’s “Meaningfulness Wheel” which sets out lots of things that any of us can do to enhance our meaningfulness practices every day. We think that this is a great tool for reflection and inspiration on ways to build our own good wellbeing practices.

Our Local FIRM is a social connection and wellbeing hub for small business owners in Melbourne’s outer-east.

The FIRM stands for Fun, Inspiration, Relationships and Meaning – all essential ingredients for a vibrant business group.

PosWork Practice Leader, Peter Maguire created the group to meet needs that local small business owners identified during the pandemic lockdowns – a need to be socially connected and a need to learn more about how to look after the wellbeing of themselves and their families and in their workplaces.

Peter gathered a team of experienced, talented and positive minded people and culture consultants and coaches in Jen Riseborough of Next Level You, Tegan Rose of Hunt and Rose and Catie Paterson of Catie Paterson HR and together they went through a Certificate in Creating Wellbeing in Small Business Workplaces courtesy of Business Victoria.

The program which was delivered by the Wellbeing Lab provided lots of research, ideas and practical tools on wellbeing using a positive psychology approach.

The Our Local FIRM facilitation team is passing on the wellbeing learnings from that program in bite sized chunks at lunches at 2 monthly intervals where people also get that social connection with each other and build positive personal and business relationships.

Each lunch features:
  • 1 VIA Character Strength that participants unpack and explore in the context of their personal experiences
  • 1 PERMAH Pillar which people discuss and learn from each other’s perspectives on challenges and successes i. that space
  • Give and Take where people have the opportunity to share news, gratitude, opportunities or needs with the group
  • A healthy lunch provided by Glen Park Community Centre
Outside the lunches, Our Local FIRM is active on social media with a members only group on Linkedin where lots of wellbeing and business resources (blogs, videos, TED talks, podcasts and more) are shared for any member to use.
There is also an active Facebook group for members to interact, learn more about each other and support each other.

Looking for a reputable, proven, effective and playful process to build wellbeing for you (the ME Level), your team (the WE Level) or your organisation (the US Level)?

Would you be wowed if there is one that you can access for free?

Well there is one – it is called the PERMAH Survey.

The Wellbeing Lab & AHRI Partnership 

Over the past few years, the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI) has partnered with The Wellbeing Lab to run a National Workplace Wellbeing Survey on a number of occasions since 2018.  They have used the PERMAH Survey with over 1,000 workers on each occasion to generate some remarkable findings and insights such as:

  • Many Australian workers are reporting a significant increase in their levels of resilience which is positively impacting workplace outcomes.
  • Many Australian workers are struggling to sustain their levels of wellbeing motivation and psychological safety to amplify their wellbeing.
  • Many Australian workers are experiencing a significant decline in their levels of Positive Emotions, Meaning and Health. They appear tired.
  • Mental health remains a struggle for many Australian workers, but dealing with people has become the biggest challenge workers are facing.
  • Australian workers have less trust in their bosses when it comes to talking to them about caring for their wellbeing at work.
  • The consistent provision of mental health and wellbeing workplace support – beyond just EAP – is improving wellbeing and performance outcomes.
  • Australian workers who are working from home are happy with their current working arrangements and it is not harming their wellbeing.

What this clearly shows us is that mental health and wellbeing is front and centre as a priority for organisations to address and that the PERMAH Survey is a great tool to help make that happen.

What is the PERMAH Survey?

The PERMAH Survey was developed by a team of positive psychology researchers and professionals right here in Australia. It is based on the groundbreaking work of Professor Martin Seligman who is widely regarded as the father of positive psychology. In his bestselling book “Flourish”, Professor Seligman identified 5 elements of wellbeing, which are: 

  • Positive emotions: the experience of positivity found in gratitude and joy and other positive emotions that build resilience
  • Engagement: the opportunity to use our strengths to do things that we are good at and enjoy doing
  • Relationships: enjoying connections to people that are authentic, supportive and energising
  • Meaning: a sense of belonging to something that is bigger and has purpose
  • Accomplishment: a belief in one’s ability to make a positive difference and then doing that

Other researchers subsequently added “Health” which is about good wellbeing practice with exercise, nutrition and sleep. So there you have PERMAH.

How does PERMAH work?

Take the survey at https://permahsurvey.com. It is free and it won’t take you long (10 to 15 minutes).

You will then be able to download your personal PERMAH wellbeing report and access lots of tips and resources including a Wellbeing Plan which you can personalise based on the pillars of wellbeing that you want to work on.

Take the survey every 6 months or so to update where you are at and to adjust your plan accordingly.

Organisation Options

The PERMAH Survey can be deployed as an organisation wide wellbeing assessment and improvement tool. It can be done for while organisation or for divisions or locations or teams or however else you want to arrange it.

ADD A BIT OF MUSIC TO YOUR DAY

Did you know that playing music or listening to music provides a great workout for your brain and is terrific for healthy ageing?

Well that is what medical researchers are telling us.

John Hopkins Medicine tell us:”Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness, and memory.”

There are numerous studies that make the link between music and better health and wellbeing.

Something we all know is that music is a great social connector as well – at parties that you go to, at concerts and nightclubs and dancehalls, in church and even at events where national anthems are played.

We conducted our own experiment over the past couple of years with daily Facebook posts featuring musical favourites – an album or a song or a video clip. Friends told us how these posts brought back a lot of happy memories and that increased their happiness. It was great demonstration of the positive impact that music can have on anyone.

More recently, we have been producing little videos that have a bit of background music and the creation of those has been a really enjoyable experience in part because it has involved finding that right piece of music for the video.

So we recommend adding a little music to your day, however that might work for you.
